Whatevah

No real news, but I'm overdue for posting something, so here are some recent happenings and thoughts.

PopPop and I have been wondering about the hummingbirds, not having seen them these past couple days. I changed the sugar water in the feeders yesterday and they were still pretty much full. Usually the one near the front walk would be empty and the other at least half empty, but they seemed untouched. We thought the hummers may have decided to migrate early, since it's been a cool late summer. However, I spotted one of the female hummers this morning and again this evening, so at least one is still around. I'll keep the feeders going through early October, in case we get any migrating hummingbirds.

I went to see His Wench today, my friend that gets me website jobs (many many thanks for that, as I am absolutely NOT a salesperson, or really even a people person). Not only did she have cash in hand for me for one job, she had two other jobs for an existing client. Excellent.

Queenee is at the Philadelphia Candy Show (in Atlantic City), and I have been trying to get her return boarding pass for her. I'll print it and fax it to her hotel. It would help if I entered the correct information into the web form, right? Is she leaving FROM Boston? NOOOOOOOOO. No wonder I kept getting an error. Naturally, I didn't figure this out until I had a tech person on the phone. Then it hit me ... D'OH. Many apologies, a few chuckles, and now I'm waiting for the boarding pass to come up so I can print it. USAirways.com is painfully slow.

Finally, those of you keeping track of the furchildren know by now that Sophia has been going outside for the past couple weeks. She's been very good, not heading straight for the street like she used to. Today was a watershed day for her. Late this afternoon, the poncey cat was tossing a dead sparrow around in the back yard. Maybe she managed to catch it last night, as there was a riot in the redbud tree last night just before she came in for the night, but regardless, it is her first outdoors hunting success and she was very pleased with herself. When I saw her, it was around 5pm, and after a couple final aerial tosses and some batting around, the dead sparrow was consumed. No doubt she was sure I was about to come take the bird away and revive it somehow, as past experience has taught her (I've taken several injured-but-not-dead mice from her). She is sound asleep on my lap now and will sleep well tonight, no doubt dreaming of her next conquest. Mind you, for a cat who has spent the better part of her life indoors, she is an accomplished huntress. I can't tell you how many mice she caught in the little house in Jeffersonville, and of course she caught that flying squirrel in the back room here last year. With any luck, she'll stop catching birds and move on to the many moles in the yard.

  1. I didn't know Sofia was going outside during the day now. Not just for a stroll and back in, but to capture, kill, smell, taste everything on the other side of the looking glass!!

I'm sure Queenee is having a great time at the show.. Atlantic City.. what fun.

On the job business, I hope the payment was for that one that kept changing it's mind so many times!

I have to thank you wabbit for putting up the website for the Krew... many folks have stopped by there to view the pictures.

  2. OK, guys, let's put two and two together. Sophia gets out of the house. The hummingbirds disappear. Hmmmm.

  3. Nah, she'd be braggin' on herself if she caught a hummingbird. I'd be stunned if she even got close to catching one, there really aren't good hiding places near the feeders. Besides, it's been chilly, so maybe the hummers are moving South for the winter.

This reminds me of Boy Cat coming down the hill in Erwinna, hollering for you to come out and thank him for helping out with the groceries. He was a good little man.

  5. Wasn't that a woodpecker that Boy Cat jumped that night on the patio when we had company? -- Cheryl and Dick, I forget whom else. He was a kool kat. I'm sorry that he got so down over on River Road that he had to do himself in. It's still far from cool down here in Dante's Inferno. Count yourself lucky -- and civilized -- living in a temperate climate (for now).

  6. I don't remember the James bird, though I do recall him bringing things home for company. I was thinking about the time we heard him howling, and I told you he was trying to get you to come see what he had caught, and you didn't believe me. He was coming down the hill with some sort of bird, yowling and so pleased that you came out to acknowledge his capture. He was very, very cool.

I recall another time we were heading out to somewhere and had to stop and praise him for killing something.

Which cat was it that used to drag the snakes home, was that Momma Cat or the Boyo?

And now I'm remember the morels. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  8. I surely do remember the boy's pride over his catch that day, and you are right also in recalling the scenario where you assured me he was calling out his admirers rather than just caterwauling. And the discovery of the morels too; I've never seen them growing that way again. But the incident I mentioned took place one evening on the patio. A goodly collection of our friends were over for a barbecue and conversation. Candles were burning all over the hillside as well as on the patio for our only light. Suddenly in the midst of this pleasant and relaxed scene a whirring of wings and Boy Cat springs from out of nowhere and snags a woodpecker from mid-flight out of the air. This is probably ten o'clock at night. I recall chasing him all over until we could extricate and release the unfortunate birdie. I never inquired, but how must Boy Cat have felt betrayed.

  9. Boyo was such an athlete. I don't know if that one was helping feed the guests so much as feeling full of himself and showing everyone what he could do. No doubt he was disappointed that we were less than thrilled and impressed.

Re: the poopy bed incident - I maintain it was Bill and not one of the cats, and he's just trying to foist it off on some poor, innocent feline!

But if I had to guess which puss might do such a thing, I would guess Grimpule. She was very smart and could be a spiteful bitch.
