Gustav making its way to New Orleans

Hurrican GustavThe poor folks along the Gulf coast are still trying to recover from Katrina, and now three years later almost to the day they have Gustav bearing down on them. The hurricane is all over the national news, so FEMA won't be able to get away with turning a blind eye this time, though they seem to be better prepared. Of course, anything would be better prepared when compared to "great job Brownie".

For our own family, we're happy to see that Gustav has largely bypassed the Keys. Fay was a lingering headache — Anhaga told me it rained for days and days after Fay was supposedly gone. Hopefully the approaching Tropical Storm Hanna (!!) won't become a hurricane, right now Hanna seems to be making a straight approach toward the Keys. Fingers and toes crossed!

  1. Gustav is SSW of us right now... we have had a rainy, windy ENE day as usual with tropical weather. We've had two Tornadoes develop and move off us with no incident, one was off Big Pine and No Name Key and the one by Bahia Honda Key. Right now we have no bands that indicate high rotation, but they watch them closely and will do so overnight. It's been business as usual, Key West High School opened to shelter anyone having concerns of safety, no evacuations no airport closure etc. I feel for the folks in Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica etc. and later up in the central Gulf coast, this baby is really growing and it's just now going to hit our Hot Florida Gulf waters... Or as we refer to the next 100 mile area the "G-spot"!!! and then off she'll be with wild fury!!
Restaurant was a wash out today... music bands canceled as was the Cajun low-country shrimp boil that was planned... Mr B just now closed down and is headed home.. L went to the movies with neighbors and will do a stay-over, Miss P has been calling all day since 7am! she still gets anxious and will cut and run on a moments notice! R finally calmed down after complaining that I had no real plan to his satisfaction on this one to evacuate and I was schooled about it for over an hour this morning... he is the calm voice of reason and my prepare and cleanup committee, thank goodness.
Hanna, well who knows... that's next week... We sure are getting the rain too Anhaga!!!
Okay... severe thunderstorm warning now... off the computer I go....... Thanks Wabbit for posting!! I've had a reallllly great time reading and catching up tonite... it's hot and sticky here, (I'm under the fans)

  3. Cuba got hammered, but they also seem pretty well organized for hurricanes. They managed to evacuate 350,000 people before Gustav hit them, so at least casualties in Cuba should be kept to a minimum.

From the weather reports we're seeing, it looks like you folks are getting drenched, the northern part of Gustav went right over the Lower Keys. I hope you don't have too much damage from rain or high water. How did Miss P make out in Key West?

Maybe TS Hanna will peter out or turn before it gets to you, I sure hope so, but right now it looks to be heading straight at the Keys.
