Our group stands at eleven members, six hens and five toms. Of the toms, one is the dominant male and he looks like he's been through the wars. Two of the other four seem to try to push at him for control, but so far, he is still the big bird. We think they are roosting across the street, but they have been spending a great deal of time here in the yard the past few days. I can get fairly close to them, but I keep my eye on the toms. The females are freakish and will run away with the slightest shift in the breeze, but they don't move far from us when we're out in the driveway or yard.
The hens split up from the toms today. The toms went across the street early this afternoon, while the hens lazed around under the ironwood tree and mozied back and forth from the back yard to the bird feeders. They finally decamped across the street just before 6pm.
Just knowing these bastards are in the yard and driveway irritates me to no end. I may stop eating turkey now, the thought puts me to sleep!
ReplyDeleteAgain they bring me back to posts of years past! Am I doing a repeat? I'll have to check. I just hate these dirty birds and their bigger than cow flops.
The coyote will get a feed I'm sure. Nice video of them though.
I don't hunt, but these guys would have me looking for the guns. arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Of all the birds in the area these are the dinosaurs for sure.
Oh, they aren't nearly as bad as the turkeys you remember. Those were the domestic birds that someone decided would be good to raise. They were roosting on the deck rails all the time and in the driveway and on the walks, shitting their brains out.
ReplyDeleteThese wild turkeys keep well away from the house most of the time. They do come to the bird feeders to clean up whatever is on the ground, but so far they haven't made a tremendous mess.
And we're more or less down to just the six hens now. The toms haven't been back since the group split up. The girls hang out by the horseshoe pits or the compost pile all day and go across the street at night.
If those hens keep hanging out behind the wall, they will be coyote meat soon. Looks like that Tom has tangled already! Okay, wine time. LOL
