Instincts took over, James Van Iveren says, when he rushed out his door to the sound of a woman being raped in an apartment above. "It was a woman screaming," he recalled Tuesday. "She was screaming for help."Here's my question: why wasn't the video-watching neighbor charged with something, like disturbing the peace? If his television is turned up so loud that his neighbor thinks there is a problem, there *is* a problem. Turn the volumn on the damned thing down, huh? Geez. The prosecutor should drop the charges against Van Iveren, the PD should thank him for doing what they are forever whining that people don't do, and return his sword and call it a day.
Sword in hand, he bounded up the stairs, kicked in the door and confronted a man who turned out to be alone - watching a pornographic movie. "Now I feel stupid," Van Iveren said.
Worse yet, police seized his sword - a family heirloom - carted him to jail and referred the case to a prosecutor who charged Van Iveren with three criminal counts.

Spank your monkey quietly, m'kay?
Personally, I'd be happy to have a neighbor willing to bolt up the stairs, sword in hand, to rescue a damsel in distress.

What almost became a Darwin Award speaks volumes of how our "laws" supposedly serve us. The justice system is BENDING OUR BRAINS.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sick of people doing whatever they want for their own gain, there is so little compassion or tolerance or even basic common sense anymore. Couldn't the cops at the scene determine that sword guy wasn't a real threat to anyone, that he was just trying to help someone he heard screaming? Are they required to piss away tax dollars on this kind of thing?
ReplyDeleteOk, that comment makes very little sense. Let me give it a bit of context. The last day has seen the news eating up the Anna Nicole Smith body possession case. Whacko "judge" Sideshow declined to be responsible for making a decision and turned the body over to the child's guardian. The whole thing was such a circus, and there is no end in sight, since the mother is now filing an appeal. Talk about people who are only in it for themselves. The woman is dead, plant her and be done with it. What is her mother's real interest in burying her in Texas, besides cashing in in some way? People are warped.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, with all of that in mind, I thought the Oconomowoc cops could have exercised a little discretion at the scene instead of looking to get themselves into the local news. And could the photo of sword guy have been any worse?
