Spring is really here

WebWabbit's bird photos at Photobucket

We got a little snow last night, maybe 2-3" of very wet, heavy snow, but by noon it was almost gone. It was a Camelot snow, meaning it was on the grass and the trees, but not on the streets or sidewalks. My kind of snow!

We've had a slew of birds show up today. Grackles, red-winged blackbirds, and some other kind of good-sized black bird as yet unidentified. PopPop checked the bird report in the Sunday newspaper and neither the red-wings nor the grackles had been reported as being in the area yet. We started wondering when the Baltimore Orioles and Bluebirds would show up. PopPop got the binoculars and went out on the deck to try identifying some odd tracks in the snow behind the barn, when, within five minutes of saying we hadn't see a bluebird for a while, a pair arrived. I didn't get any really good photos, and I'm shooting through glass, but it was exciting to see them. We reported sighting the red-wings and the bluebirds to the MA Audubon Society. I will continue to add to the bird folder at Photobucket for anyone interested in seeing whatever photos I manage to snap.

Poor Queenee is sick with a bad cold. She was sick when she got home from Las Vegas on Friday morning, and spent most of yesterday in bed with a nasty cough. Hopefully another day of rest will sort her out.

  2. The return of the birdies, the greening of the bare branches, and puddles everywhere, are just some of the lovely, cheery things that make spring in the northeast so uplifting. Here in central Florida it's a lot of the same - boat-tail grackles and mockingbirds all year round; the latter species try thier level best to make up for the lack of variety that comes with the paucity of songbirds. The occasional stork and crane; ibis, egrets, herons, anhingas browsing the ponds and lakes as well; stilts and sanderlings on the shore, with pelicans, terns and gulls in the air above. They're nice, of course, but your springtime changing of the avian guard is good.
