There is a sweet smell in the air

Calamondin

I remember how thrilled Webwabbit was when the redbud was in bloom and the pictures she posted. Well, I have to send in this pic of my Calamondin. I just picked the last little orange three weeks ago and now it is in full bloom again. This has to be the best most delicious little treat tree you can have here in the Keys. It hasn't failed me yet and I pray it continues to be happy in the large pot I have it in on the patio. It receives only afternoon sun and is in a no wind area on the West side of the house. What a treat it is to come home, pick a juicy treat (skin and all), spit the seeds as you climb the stairs with a smile (sweet/tart). I hope you can imagine the aroma of sweet orange blossoms.... Oh MY OH MY...

The little Meyer Lemon that I have is also in bloom again. It will be a few years before it provides fruit. The blueberry bush we have on the porch looks like it should also be getting ready for berry picking' in a month or so. YES Blueberries down here in the Keys!

My tomato endeavor has been so-so. I have a Juliette (a cherry tomato shaped like a miniature roma) hanging from the bottom of a hanging bucket on the porch (makes it hard for iguana's to get at, much like your squirrels). I get 1 or 2 a day, we just pick and eat as we walk by. They are really delicious. Seems like everything is blooming here and doing well. All my planting after hurricane Wilma paid off.

I know it's bitter cold up there, and I want you to know spring is just around the corner. But, if you can't wait 'till then, come on down! By the way, I put a snowflake up just for ya'll!!!
Here below is an update 5/19/07 with fruit starting to ripen, and even more flowers for future fruit! Smells great all over again just 2 months later!

  1. Fresh lemons, yum. They are selling for about $1 each up here if you don't get them on sale.

I don't know what PopPop has planned for the garden this year, maybe some tomatoes, peppers, carrots and zucchini. We'll see. DamCat has a good garden spot at her house, BluePhan will have to start a garden there!
