Memorial Day

Queenee and I are spending the better part of this long weekend doing some Spring cleaning and wardrobe shifting. The winter clothes have been exchanged for summer and the large plastic bins are packed and stored. It's been very warm here, in the 90's for a couple days and high 80's for a couple more. I prefer cooler temperatures, but the long days of sun are nice.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketPopPop has been working out in the garden, with Eve supervising. Every winter he debates about whether he'll bother planting in the Spring, and every Spring he gets out there and turns the soil and plants. This year its tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, butternut squash, parsnips, beets and pumpkins. He's already harvested the asparagus and it was yummy. The pear trees are loaded with tiny pears and we're hoping we'll get them before the pear thief does this year. We're fairly certain we know who it is, a not-too-distant neighbor who sneaks through the woods and steals the harvest.

I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend! I'm rooting for Danica Patrick in the Indy 500, and hope that all three women in this year's race do well. And I don't want to jinx the BoSox, but Manny Ramirez is finally hitting - go Sox!

  1. Go RED SOX!!! I'll say it ... they are owning it!

I can't believe you haven't realized that pear thief! Where is the Deacon stealth unit.. would be one heck of a good story to tell. Night vision, paint ball guns, no harm ... just good clean warfare. Logito would stalk for nights awaiting the wild-yeti-pear-molester from up in a tree post! Isn't it time to have a tree platform built for the occasion? And afterward everyone sit down, laugh, make idle threats about next years crop, etc., etc.?

  2. Hey, I'd settle for some of those creepy red-eyed owls like the ones in the Wizard of Oz, remember those? The problem is, the law is on the side of the perpetrator - if you shot someone with a paintball, you'd be sued and you'd lose. Legally you have to give fair warning and allow time for the trespassers to leave. No fun in that.

  3. So okay,, can we net them? You know,,, throw a cast net at them from above in the trees? After all they are thieves in the night?
Fair warning would be.. "who is there? get out of my pear tree", and catch em up! All this in a very "friendly" way, not a serious OH MY GOD your stealing my pears!!!! Just a "I got you" finally you little pear molester!
You may have taken me the wrong way in thinking I'm saying kill the bastards.... no no no... I'm talking fun and games here..
or.. preclude them by picking the pears yourself and hanging rotten tomatoes on the tree for their midnight raid? I don't know ... just have fun with the theft this year, I bet they have a good laugh every year ... it's your turn! Don't let them be in high cotton again this year without a good clean fight for the pear tree. LOL
Those owls would be awesome! OH and wabbit you should be there with camera in hand to record the momentous capture!! LOL

  4. No, I didn't misunderstand you, I knew what you meant. I'm just saying, if someone wanted to press charges for assault because you hit them with a paintball while they were trespassing on your property and stealing other property, you would be found guilty.

I've been saying a camera would do the trick for years. How about we set up a camera with a wicked flash, say "are you stealing our pears again?", and flash the bastards. That way, not only do they have a very weak case against you (at most their eyesight would be affected for a few minutes), but you have evidence of malfeasance.

Personally, I don't care about the pears all that much. It would be nice to have some, but the real pita is having to listen to PopPop complain after the fact. Mind you, if he harvested all the pears down there, we'd end up pitching 90% of them anyway.

I just think it would be fun to catch the neighbors being un-neighborly. If they came to the front door and asked if they could take half the pears, PopPop would probably help them with picking pears. But they are selfish and sneaky. Not very nice people.

  6. The weather here is just wonderful right now, 70-85F, low humidity, cool at night - I can live with these temperatures. Last week was too hot and humid for me, and unfortunately, I suspect it is what the summer weather will be for July and August.

We haven't had a lot of rain these past few days, just a sprinkle yesterday morning. Maybe we'll get another drizzle Thursday/Friday.

    Go Sawks!
